Carnival Ride

I think in my last post I mentioned that, that was the last shot of my night series.  It was except then I found this photo.  This has always be another of my favorites. This was very early in my photo studies. I went to the carnival and set up my tri-pod to frame the ride.  Then I figured maybe a long exposure would look cool with some blurring so I set the exposure for 1/2 second.  Now remember this was way before digital so you didn’t see your shots until you made some prints.  I only made one exposure for this ride.  I don’t know if this was a lucky shot or just a picture with no preconcieved ideas about how to take a photograph.  I was was really just learning photography at this stage.  I think that the ride only advanced one car length and all the lights are sharp is what makes this image stand out.  I wish I had tried a few more shots but being the poor starving student that I was, I figured one shot ought to do it. Good thing I was right.

I remember that stage, and I believe that I am still in it. 😉
Or at least, I hope that I am still in that stage. What I mean by that is that I love that moment, that sensation when the metaphorical flash bulb blows and I realize that I have caught a new tendril of knowledge and all that it took was clicking the shutter, over and over and over … Experience is the greatest teacher, yet a close second is when experience is shared. And that is what you are doing so well by showing these nuggets of beauty. Well done Mike!

I really like this image. It’s even more impressive knowing that you captured it on film. Very nice, Mike!

    • Thanks Logan, I think it may have been with Kodak VR 400. I thought a long exposure was 1/2 second back then. I have printed this many times and scanned it every time I get a new scanner. I keep noticing more and more about it even after 25 years.
