WOW !!! I can’t believe how long it’s been since I have posted any pictures. Just a couple ramblings about photo techniques which I hope were very helpful but no pretty pictures. I am so ashamed 😦
So tonight as I sat at the computer trolling the net for some new computer gear, I happened to look up and out the window. “Hey, why is the sky such a funky color in that part of the sky right now?” I thought to myself. So I got up and looked outside. Then I immediately ran back in and grabbed my camera. We had a lot of clouds passing by earlier and some scattered showers so I wasn’t expecting a pretty sunset.
Boy was I wrong. I ran out into the street which gave me the best view and fired off a few shots. I love the fall and winter sunsets. The colors are so vibrant that you don’t need to do any adjustments in Photoshop. I literally only did a little contrast adjustment on these because they were shot in RAW and always come out flat. Mostly I slid the Blacks slider up on these three shots and the contrast slider to about 40 in Camera Raw.
But the thing I want to emphasize here the most is how fast this all happened. Five minutes tops from the time I saw the pink clouds in the East to this last shot. The exposure was dropping beyond what I could hand hold. I think my last shot was 1/15 of a second at f5.6, ISO 800. I needed a tripod but I knew I didn’t have time to grab it, attach the camera, set it up, lock it down…..whooops, sunset’s gone. The pink in the East was gone in one minute. So my advice for shooting a really pretty sunset: arrive early, be prepared and watch the sunset.
